Problem scanning barcodes

I just received a bluetooth barcode scanner, and I'm having an excel-specific issue with it.

I purchased the scanner to quickly enter student IDs, which have a Code 39 barcode on the back. Translated, the barcodes all begin with the letter S, followed by 8 digits (S00012345). Here's the issue:

I can connect the scanner to my Ipad (which runs excel). When I try to scan the barcode, it will enter the whole, complete barcode maybe 1 time in 20. Usually, it will give me any of the following (referring to the example above) S0001, S00012, S000123. Sometimes it will just not give me the complete barcode. At other times, it might give me an incomplete barcode AND do a hard return to the next line while also depositing a number from the previous scan.

Here's why I'm posting here: It only happens in Excel. In Word, Notes, Numbers (the mac version of excel), and Pages, it scans flawlessly. Ive tried changing the formatting of the column in Excel to text, general, number....nothing works. Help!

Thanks,

J
