Excel file on SharePoint

I want to build a file that utilises an Access database but the file needs to be stored on a SharePoint site.

Microsoft have informed me that using an Excel front-end to query an Access database doesn't work and I'm wondering if anyone has managed to get a front end Excel file to work with a database when located on a SharePoint site?
