Default Adding a range with an empty cell

I have a dynamic data input that at times has empty cells. Could be just one or more cells.
I simply want to auto sum or add up each row of numbers up and down. However, it wont add because when there is no data it is represented as (-) dash.
How do I get around this so it will ignore these cells with a dash? See example table.

Thanks for any help in resolving this issue for me!

    2-Jan 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    1 34 200 43 -- 97 27 33
    2 34 226 46 -- 99 46 37
    3 374 389 504 -- 625 396 455
    4 55 60 328 -- 154 66 57
    5 -- -- -- -- -- -- --

You can select A1to A9 (which includes a blank cellfor the total)....then click on autosum !
Then drag cell A9 across as far as required.
