file corrupting when saved

I have a large and complex file currently open and working. I've been saving regular versions v1.1, 1.2 etc throughout the day. When I attempt to reopen any of these I'm getting the error "we found a problem with some content in ..blah blah.. do you want to repair?". The repair tool doesn't work well enough, my file is too far gone to try and fix it, and the reopened file is a pile of ****

The thing is, the file is currently open and working. I've tried saving as .xlsm, .xlsx, and .xlsb, all versions have the same problem. I'm holding off trying .xls for now

Is there anything I can do to stop this corruption happening, or remove it before attempting to close and reopen the live file?

Excel Facts

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Does it tell you what it removed when repairing?

update for anyone with same problem

- Saved as .xls with new file name
- Without closing file, saved as something else - which effectively means the .xls version is now closed
- Opened .xls version from scratch, with no error message
- Saved as new version in required format

Not perfect and haven't tested that all formulas / sections have survived, but a significant improvement :)

Hi Rory, there were a number of things removed but I don't recall the details. Got to run for a train now but may investigate further tomorrow

Cheers

None of these things had a problem in earlier file versions, many of them were not changed between versions (e.g. Styles, there have been no imported worksheets, no new styles etc., I always keep these clean). Some of these things don't even exist, e.g. there is no Sheet8 object

Removed Records:
Style from /xl/styles.bin part
Repaired Records:
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet8.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet13.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet20.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet35.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet36.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet37.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet49.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet52.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet54.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet55.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet59.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet62.bin part
Cell information from /xl/worksheets/sheet65.bin part

Sadly the name of the object doesn't necessarily correspond to the tab or code name. It's usually its positional index if I remember rightly.
