This post can be deleted as I figured out the solution, but the option to delete is no longer available.

Waterfall charts in Excel?
Office 365 customers have access to Waterfall charts since late 2016. They were added to Excel 2019.
Hi Pete,
if you add this code to the worksheet_SelectionChange Event it should do what you are after.

Code:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
    Me.Range("A1:XFD1048576").Interior.ColorIndex = 0
    Target.EntireRow.Interior.ColorIndex = 6
    Target.EntireColumn.Interior.ColorIndex = 6
End Sub
