I want to find the first column in a range that contains a value. I can find the last column that has a value with the following array formula, where the values are in cells T1:Z1:

{=MAX(COLUMN(T1:Z1)*(T1:Z1<>""))}

I would think that the following would work but it always returns 0:

{=MIN(COLUMN(T1:Z1)*(T1:Z1<>""))}

Why does this formula not work, and how can I find the first column with a value?

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.

Give this array-entered** formula a try...

=MIN(IF(T1:Z1="","",COLUMN(T1:Z1)))

**Commit this formula using CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER and not just Enter by itself
