If you use

=MONTH (date)

with a given date OR cell value, it will return the month number

If you want the month name you would need to use

=TEXT(date,"mmmm")

@Salamullah, If you are not using it in calculations can you not just use the =TODAY() and custom format the cell as either m, mm, mmm or mmmm?
