Will a converted excel workbook work as well as a new one?

I have a large excel workbook that was made with excel 2003.
I am now using Excel 2016. If I "convert" the old worbook to the new 2016
format, is there any downside? (It seems to work fine, but will it work as well
with no lags, or issues, when compared to if I made a "new" workbook with 2016?)
Note: The old workbook does have a lot of VBA codes and some macros.
(They all seem to work ok).
Thanks in advance!
