Default How to get into that edit mode?

In edit mode, when one letter is highlighted and left or right arrow key is pressed, usually, no letter is highlighted anymore. However, recently, I highlighted a letter, pressed an arrow key, and the next letter was highlighted. This is quite handy if I need to replace several letters in a string.

The single character highlight was due to Replace mode being active. If Insert mode is active, characters are just inserted, not inserted and replaced. Press Insert key to toggle the insert mode.

Edit Mode is by F2 or doubleclicking.

Further investigation shows that in insert mode, once a key is hit, the next letter to the right is highlighted. No matter what key is then hit, letter, number or arrow key, the highlight is gone. No more letter is highlighted. The insert mode I got into kept the highlight. I could replace all X's to Y's if I just kept hitting the arrow key. The highlight stayed until I exited edit mode.
