keyboard Shortcut for the ½ character

Hi

I have some tedious data entry to do into a spreadsheet. Mostly text.
Every once in a while I have to use the 1/2 character in a string

So I can copy and paste the character from the clipboard (very quick)
but copy/paste gets used a lot anyway so then I have
- to stop typing. go find the 1/2 character and copy/paste (very slow); or
- insert symbol (which is a slow process)
I dont seem to be able to create a keyboard shortcut
I cant execute a macro in the middle of typing a row of text

I tried using autocorrect to change 1/2 into the half character and that's not bad but it only seems to work if there is a space in front of the 1
so
21/2 does not change but
2 1/2 becomes 2½ which is great

Any better suggestions?

Excel Facts

Round to nearest half hour?
Use =MROUND(A2,"0:30") to round to nearest half hour. Use =CEILING(A2,"0:30") to round to next half hour.
In your Autocorrect options, put the keyboard shortcut in ()'s, then type the 1/2 as normal.

Actually, I see that might not work as you intended. Just re-read your post. You could type it with the parentheses and then go back and delete them, but that still wouldn't quite fix it. I'll see if I can find an alt solution.

You cannot run a macro whilst editing a cell, so creating a macro won't help.
The autocomplete is probably the best option, but your value will then be text, rather than a number.

As an aside, there is a non-Excel solution to this. You would need to understand how to use AutoHotkey or own, say, a programmable mouse. Then you could run a macro when you please.

hhhmmm autocorrect is fine when there is a leading space but when there is not . . . . () may be preferable as () dont appear anywhere else and I can globally delete them. Messy though

If you're typing text into a cell, and you want to insert the 1/2 symbol, hold down the Alt key, and press 0189 on the number pad (not the numbers on the top of the keyboard).
