Width of columns on standard column chart

I'm new to Excel. I created a standard column chart in Excel 2000 using Insert>Chart and would like to know how to increase the width of the resulting columns. I know that decreasing the gap between them increases the the width, but I want more space between them.

I tried selecting the data series and dragging the handles on the sides but they don't move.

Thanks.

You want to increase the width of your columns, but without decreasing the gap? Increase your chart area.
