How can someone change the format of a cell so that it will hold more than 255 characters?

Excel Facts

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
Hi Soozie
I don't think you can do this on a permanent basis but it would appear you can work with more than 255 characters in a cell. Sometimes when I go to copy a sheet a message tells me that some cells contain more than 255 characters which will be lost unless you actually copy those cells and paste to the new sheet. They will probably be truncated to 255 characters when you go to save.

Formatting doesn't alter the contents of a worksheet cell. Furthermore, a cell can contain 32,000 characters.

Good question. I think what Suzie meant is that when you wrap text in a cell, it will only show up to 255 characters. You can enter more characters than that but it shows as "XXXXXXXXXXXX".

If anyone has a work-around to this, I would also greatly appreciate knowing what it is.
