"Not enough memory, unable to save external link values"

I get this error message despite having about 300 meg of free ram and 1 gig of disk space. The message appears when saving some large files. The files do actually appear to save after clicking on OK. Sometimes it crashes afterward. What causes this?
 

Excel Facts

Spell Check in Excel
Press F7 to start spell check in Excel. Be careful, by default, Excel does not check Capitalized Werds (whoops)
Upgrade to Excel 2002 because it's memory manager is 128mb instead of Excel 2000's
64mb limit.
