ppls'

the path to my external references seems to change by itself on its own will. Now even with the source sheet open all my linked cells claim they "can't find name in sheet"

Why is it doing that?

help- I am going to explode!!

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Edouard_g, why not help us to help you by giving some relavant detail and/or an example of the chain of events.

well
when I try and manualy update a link in my sheet

eg:='\ADMINSTRATOREDTAPR-LOG-S1.xls'!S1_Q1_01_volume

where S1_Q1_01_volume is the sum of a bunch of cells in the source sheet. I get a message that the name (S1_Q1_01_volume) can't be found or that the name is something other than a rectangular reference- what does that mean?

getting pretty anoyed as my work is now stalled.

The message "the name (S1_Q1_01_volume) can't be found" means just that, there is named cell with that name.

The message "the name is something other than a rectangular reference" probably means that you are trying to return a named range that is non-contigous.

You have confused me totally. You intially said:

1> "with the source sheet open all my linked cells claim they "can't find name in sheet"

And also say:

2> "external reference path changes of its own accord"

Now you are sying NEITHER is the case.

Recapping the problem:

when source file open ok.

when source file closed, I get the can't find name error thing.(the path is correct)

the "cant' find name error" occurance when the source file was open was (I think) due to the path having changed because the manual link option is not availlable when the source is open. or possibly by little brain failing.

If you are using Dynamic ranges for your names, you could get a problem like that, because they are only recalculated when the sheet is open.
