I'm trying to create a time series line chart over 20years. But some for some of the years the data is missing and Excel refuses to join it up. How do I make it? Doing 'hide' joins it up but also gets rid of the years and I need to retain the scale of the graph.

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.

If by "join it up" you mean interpolate, and if the missing data is represented by empty cells after selecting the chart choose the Tools | Options... menu command and click on
the "Plot empty cells as: Interpolated" option located on the Chart tab.
