Trouble with worksheets made using Japanese version of Excel

I work with someone who creates her spreadsheets using a japanese version of Excel. I frequently encounter problems with her produced files.
Unfortunately, she has the habit of hiding columns, rows, using non-consistant formatting, weird page breaks, varying fonts & breaks, etc. Some of this comes from importing problems, too.
Is there a way to "strip" a workbook of all formatting, formulas, hidden cells, page breaks, etc? I would just like to end up with clean data that I can work with. Copying and pasting seems to bring a lot of the problems to the new workbook.
