I have a date field that is formated with the year(YYYY)-month(MM)-day(dd) I would like the 2008-01-11 to be displayed Friday, January 11, 2008.

Show numbers in thousands?
Use a custom number format of #,##0,K. Each comma after the final 0 will divide the displayed number by another thousand
Hi citizenrain

Welcome to the board

Custom format ddd, mmmm, dd, yyyy ought to do you right

Perhaps it is a 'text date'. Select the date(s), Data > Text to columns. Click Next twice to take you to the 3rd screen. Check Date and select YMD on the drop-down, then click Finish. That should convert it to a 'real' date and the custom formatting should work.

I import the data from the database into a worksheet then query the data to make pivot tables. I have tried formating the imported data but nothing happens. My guess is that i have to somehow convert the data to something that excel understands.
