entering the date

I am trying to type "03/22/2002" in a cell on the spreadsheet, but it is coming out as "37,337".

Any advice that someone can give as to why this is happening?

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
Format the cell as mm/dd/yy

Currently, the cell is formatted as #,##0
