Changing limits in an external pivot table data source

when trying to build a pivot table from an external data source in Excel 97 I am unable to write a simple SQL string without using the Array function. Is there a way around this or is there a simpler way of using the Array function to make the text more easily readable?

From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
