Some of the traders at our company create huge spreadsheets (40mb to 80mb)with links to other large spreadsheets and then have trouble opening them. Sometimes it can take up to 3-4 minutes for the sheet to open. Can you give me any insight on why this might be happening and how to avoid it in the future.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Some items that cause file bloating and their potential fix:

1. The *container* becomes corrupt. Copy all sheets to a new file, one by one if necessary.

2. Contents of cells are deleting, but formatting is still stored. See *Cannot shift...* at: http://www.thewordexpert.com/excel.htm#CommonExcelIssues

3. They need to break the files up into several files.

4. They ought to be using Access instead.

I have found that the links between sheets and workbooks slow down the processing speed (I think this is referred to as bottlenecking).

One way around this continual waiting may be to open excel, go to options and switch Calculations to manual, open up all these spreadsheets you will be using and in theory you can then update the calculations by pressing F9. This may not work for you as the size of the workbooks may prohibit you from opening more than 1 at a time.
