How do I convert time to a numeric value? I have tried the "TIMEVALUE" function and get an error message. Is there a way to do this by manual formula?

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.

A true time entry like 11:30 is a 'numeric' value.

If a time entry has text as underlying format, then...

=TIMEVALUE(A1)

would convert it to true time value.

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!

Have you tried entering your time in a cell and then formatting the cell to a number? When doing so, 10:33AM turns into .44444444.

Excel's time values are stored as fractions of a day. If you need to convert a time such as 11:24 AM into hours, minutes or seconds merely multiply by 24, 1440 or 86400 respectively, and then format the results using a desired number format to get 11.4 hours, 684 minutes or 41,040 seconds.
