PivotTable saved without underlying data (XL97)

How can I make sure my pivot tables are saved WITH underlying data.
Sometimes I get the following message when trying to use my pivot tables:
"PivotTable saved without underlying data. Use the Refresh Data command to update the PivotTable."
I cannot figure out why some of my pivot tables ARE saved with the underlying data and some ARE NOT.
(I am aware of the "Refresh on open" setting but am still hoping for an answer to the above.)
Please help.

Excel Facts

Enter current date or time
Ctrl+: enters current time. Ctrl+; enters current date. Use Ctrl+: Ctrl+; Enter for current date & time.
If you right click the pivot table and choose Table Options. There is an option Save Data with Table Layout in the data source options. That needs to be checked.
