If I want to run a workbook in Excel and give several users access to the same file. Is there a way I can get Excel to stop the file opening if someone else already has write access to the file, possibly with a message like "Busy....Try again later".

Don't know if this is possible but one way to find out is to ask you guys

Thx Roy

Hi RoyinUK2000
Any network I have ever been on allows only one person at a time to use Excel unless it is set up in shared mode. Otherwise it can be opened in "Read only" condition by any one else.

I know this, what I am asking is can I stop a workbook opening if it is going to be opened in read only mode, i would rather a user not be able to get into the workbook than get into it in read only mode.

Don't know if this is possible

Thx

The data given is dafult Excel.. one live the others read only and can choose notify.. this is security...

BUT...

why not if restriction Mr A and B c d no access set a token ribg to secure the Folder the Doc lives in.. if stuck speak wit hthe IT dept thay can set this in 5 seconds flat and password protect..... simple as that..

I have done this billions of times, you might need grouping access details to be amended under armagedon (whatever network you have)

IT dept wont resist this if they do then they have not go a clue how to set networks inside network???
