overlay line and bar graphs

Goal:
To over lay two charts, 1) a line or bar graph of average monthly temperatures for various cities; 2) a floating bar graph to represents a specific target range of temperature. To get this specific range for 2, I use a stacked column graph and delete the lower value.

My Problem:
When I select all the data (#1 and 2 above) to make the chart, I can't separate the two; the closest I can get is stacked or clustered column chart. What I need, however, is a stacked (#2) column graph (so I can delete the lower value) and a separate, overlaid graph (#1) for various cities' ave monthly temp (to see how they measure compared to the target range, #2). I can't simply drag a separate graph over the other, as the vertical axis values are different.

I'm using a Mac OS, MS Office '08 and can't seem to do this....when I do it excel takes all the data and puts them in a "clustered column" graph. I can't split the two up. That is, I want one

any advice/direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
You mean hide the lower column in the stack, right? By formatting it without border or fill?

Good, because deleting it would spoil your chart.

So you have three sets of Y values, two for stacked columns and the third for a line. Plat all three in a stacked chart. Right click on the series you want to show as a line chart type, choose (Change) Chart Type, then select the line chart style you want.

Thanks Jon, really appreciate your help.

I'm just getting back to this and, as per your advice, I'm able to change whatever series I want to a NEW chart type. However, I want all four to be column charts: one stacked chart (of 2) and one a clustered chart (of 2). This I still cannot do. When I right click and select "change series chart type" they ALL change (even though I only have the desired chart checked/highlighted).

This is my problem: I have 4 series of column charts, I want two of the four to be stacked, and the other two to be clustered charts. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated! Nate
