Clipboard Oddities

Hi guys,
I used Excel vba to control a 'VBA-enabled' software... basically what I am doing is a fast copy-paste operation...
My problem is:
- Sometimes I get a message - something like, "Excel cannot perform the requested operation because the clipboard is empty" - even though the method copy is called before the paste code..

Question:
- Is there a way using vba to check the contents of the clipboard, wether empty or full... and is there a way to programatically empty the clipboard.
- If there isn't, is there a Win32 API call I can explore??

Thanks guys..
