Total of a row

Hello Mr. Excel,

I have a serie of numbers that can vary, the
serie always starts in A1 and can go till Ax.
In the cell next to Ax I want the total.
How do I do that?

Modify the formula a bit:

=SUM(!$A$1:B1)

Activate Insert|Name|Define;
Enter SumLeft in the Names in workbook box;
Enter the above formula in the Refers to box;
Click OK.

Enter in A1:C1 in some sheet, say, 1,2, and 3 respectively.

Enter in D1: SumLeft

This is giving me a circular reference. I do what you suggest, including the new formula. When I use your suggested data A1:C1 then "=SumLeft" in D1, I get "Circular D1" in the status bar.

When I check the SumLeft in Name|Define, the formula is changed to

=SUM(!$A$1:D1)
</pre>

hence the circular reference in D1. I think I've chosen the wrong thread to be interested in. **** my inquisitive mind!

Ok, I like this formula...

I put some numbers (1,2,3,4) in A14:D14. Select E14. Go to insert, names, define, and put

SumLeft

and in the refers to:

=SUM($A14:D14)

Click Add. Done !

Now, in E14 put =SumLeft, you should get 10 (As I did... :wink: )

Yeah, that worked, don't know why I couldn't get it to work before though. (apart from stupidity)

Doens't this technique destroy the integrity of the spreadsheet though. j/k
