Vlookups and downloaded reports

With certain downlaoded reports I work with, it is necessary to go through each of the matching values on the reference table and hit F2-enter before the vlookup will work.

1. Why does this happen? I have tried changing the numerical format's, etc. but only hitting F2 seems to change the referenced field.

2. I have no idea how to write the simplest macro, but am guessing I could write one to go down the column and F2 each cell.

Any help? Thanks in advance.
