Hi, all,

I am new to Excel 200 and need someone's help on 3-D scatter plot.

I have a 3-dimensional sample data, and I want to plot every sample as a point in x-y-z space. I just couldn't find any option in Chart. Any help/information is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Lawrence

Hi,

Cannot be done very well with Excel. No direct chart is available. I just read that SPSS has an add-in that you can purchase, but I've never seen it in action.

Two workarounds...

From Tushar Mehta:

...columns 1 and 2 contain x- and y-
values, each of which is an independent variable. Column 3 contains the
dependent z-values.

Most 3-D plots I can think of require a surface (since both x and y are
independent variables). Nonetheless, here is how to convert the data provided
into a 3-D 'edge' plot.

Leave the x-values in the column. Convert the y-values into a row (use Cut and
Paste Special... Transpose). Take the z-values and put them in the diagonal of
the table just created. Plot this table as a 3-D graph.

---- y values -----
| z1
| z2
x z3
values
|
| zlast

From Bill Manville:

If your X and Y values are on a regular grid you might get somewhere by making a pivot table from your data, with the first column as column field, the second as row field and the third as data field.

Then you could make a 3-D surface graph from the resulting table

Same idea.

Both of these two are Excel MVPs, so you should be in fine shape, although you shouldn't expect a crystal clear graph as you hoped.

HTH,
Jay
