Protection when using Groups/Outlines

I'm sure this is simple, but I'm perplexed. I have a large spreadsheet that needs to be protected. Since it is large, there are several columns and rows that are grouped to create summaries. It seems that Grouping and Protection are incompatable on the surface -- when ever I protect a sheet, it will not allow the groups to be expanded or contracted. Any help would be appreciated!
