Filter by Color not working

I am using Excel 2007 and suddenly I can no longer filter by color. The option is greyed out and so is the sort by Color option. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?

Is the file saved as an xlsx or xlsm or are you in Excel 97-2003 compatibility mode (xls).

Hm. I thought that you might have been in compatibility mode http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178998(office.12).aspx

Does this happen even in a new workbook? Is the sheet protected?

As well as answering VoG's questions can you tell us if there any other unusual settings for the workbook ( Shared mode maybe? )?

Probably a silly question, but you do actually have some coloured cells in that column?

Thanks all for responses. Answers in order:

- This is the first time it has happened and appears to be only on this workbook
- Sheet is not protected
- I have colored cells right across the entire row

Did you apply the colour or is it the result of table autoformats?

I formated rows by highlighting using color format (done it dozens of times)

Sorry - except that they are cell colors and not font colors.
