Excel97 on Win2K in Novell land

I working on a Novell 5 network that is upgrading workstations from Win95 to Win2K. We use Office 97. Since the upgrade we are experiencing several problems with Excel files.

I am getting multiple users having trouble saving Excel spreadsheets to the server. When they try to save changes it gives them some kind of message that it can't and it creates a .tmp file. Their spreadsheet disappears after this. If you rename this .tmp file to the original name it turns out to be the spreadsheet sans changes.

For another user since the W2K upgrade, Excel has been asking him if he wants to open the files as read write or read only
He also is not able to send e-mail from Excel.

Another cannot make changes to the Excel sheets stored in her network drive. She gets the message that they are "read only". I have checked the folders and files for both Win2K and Novell rights and permissions and read only is not set.

These problems have occured since the upgrade to Win2K Pro. Has anyone encountered this already? Any ideas?

Jack, thank you for a response.
To answer your questions
1). no the server was not updated to Win2K, it remains a Novell server with the appropriate files to support the new Win2K pro workstations
2). The Win95 workstations were upgraded to Win2K
3). All of the Win2K workstations are on a Novell Netware 5.0 LAN/WAN

We have just installed the latest client (4.83) and have installed up through SR-2 patch for Excel 97
