decimal point is a square in excel

In Microsoft Excel all my decimal points are squares. This makes it very difficult to work with. Can any one help? i tried going to control panel, regional settings, number. Decimal is set at "." anything else???

Excel Facts

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
I would go to the control panel (in Windows) and double-click Regional Settings--on the Number tab, see what the decimal symbol is set to.
