If, for example, a name on my list pops up at a later date as a reminder to call them, can the cell also be highlited by adding color --- somehow to the formula?

Press Alt+F11 from Windows Excel to open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor.
How about a conditional format where the cell is equal to =TODAY(). That would format the cell in whatever manner you want.
