A common mistake that drastically increases the size of a file is formatting entire rows or columns. Try this to find out. Press Ctrl+Home to go to the top left of the active sheet (usually A1) unless you have clicked on Freeze Panes. Then press Ctrl+End, this will take you to the lower right hand corner of the active sheet. You should have data entered in rows and columns showing. If the cursor goes to never-never land. You need to select the area from where your active data ends and do a Edit Clear All. save the file (Excel does not release this area from memory until it is saved). If this does not release the area you may have to delete Rows and/or Cols and save to free up this memory.
I have spreadsheets with 106 sheets which do not excedd 3 MB's in size.
