Importing Into Excel

I have a custom XML file which contains data (along with format information for that data) that I'd like to import into Excel. I heard Office XP supports XML, but I need to import it into Excel '97. Have you done something like this, or can you suggest a resource which could give me direction on such a task? I imagine I'd have to use a VBA macro to do this, but any resource on importing data with custom formats would be very useful. Maybe I'll need to write a conversion utility to convert the XML into another format Excel '97 can handle. Thanks!
