protecting formulas in a shared workbook

I have a spreadsheet which is accessed by several people at once. Autofilters are used. How can I protect certain cells (containing formulas) on a shared workbook, while still enabling the autofilter? If the answer is in VBA - can you please explain in words of one syllable! (It took me long enough to work out the enableautofilter command)

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
