Can the windows calculator be opened with a macro in excel?

It certainly can. You can use the Shell function to open another executable. The help file has an example which opens the calculator :-

Sub test()
Dim RetVal
RetVal = Shell("C:WINDOWSCALC.EXE", 3)
End Sub
