    This is what I have
    D1 D2
    1 cat
    2 dog
    3 mouse
    4 hello
    5 table
    A1 - if someone types in the number 3 in A1 I want mouse to populate A2

    =VLOOKUP(a1,range,2)

    don't forget to put false in the end in your formula, otherwise you will get problems with sorting

    You table description is somewhat lacking. In the absense of more info I fail to see why a sequential lookup is required when you could directly access the desired value using...

    =INDEX(D2:D6,A1)

    ...where D2:D6 contains {"cat";"dog";"mouse";"hello";"table"}.
