Saving .xls as a .csv file to open later as .dat

I was able to do this until I got a new computer running XP. Now I get an error message and a .csv file with no content is created. When I try to open it in WordPerfect or in Word, of course there's nothing to open.

Is there another way to do this so I can get the .dat file for word processing?

Excel Facts

Last used cell?
Press Ctrl+End to move to what Excel thinks is the last used cell.
Are you doing this manually? i.e. File|Save As and then choosing *.csv or are you looking to get this done using VBA?

The Excel message is:

"filename.txt" cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

Is this file located on a server or another networked machine? (Is this a WinNT or Win2000 server perchance?)

If the answer is "yes", have you tried creating a text file on your machine and have you tried opening that from Excel?

The file is on a network server, running Novell 4.2

The error message is the same whether I try to open a .txt file in Excel or try to save an .xls file as a .txt

Yes, but have you tried opening a text file that is stored on your own hard drive in Excel?

I get the feeling that this is a network problem and not a problem with Excel.

I tried using my local drive and find that I'm able to do just about everything I need to do. I'll present it as a network issue to our systems manager.

Thank you very much for your assistance and for sharinig your knowledge.
