I have a some ID numbers in column C than run for approx 75k rows.
In another column i have the following formulae:

=COUNTIF($C$3:$C$75174,C3)

I have calculation set to manual, but it is very slow when i do calculate. Is there a more efficient way of counting the instances of each ID?

Many thanks!

Chris

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
COUNTIF is a quick function. I would guess you must have a lot of other formulae in the spreadsheet. Try calculating that sheet only: Formulas > Calculation > Calculate Sheet

Thanks for the responses, i feared that countif was the most efficient via formula method.

Andrew, i cant use a pivot table for this specific part of the task but will be able to once i clear the first few hurdles - I will just have to persevere with countif for now.

Many thanks
