Hello,

New to MrExcel. I know my problem is posted in other threads, but I can't seem to find any solution. I have Excel 2007, and I have a workbook with ActiveX checkboxes on the worksheet. I also have a macro that ties the worksheet to see which checkboxes are ticked or not. I was using this file for past year or so, but all of a sudden, I cannot tick the checkboxes. Furthermore, the macro is giving me an error message saying "Object doesn't support this property or method". The workbook is unprotected, in case you may be asking.

I went into Excel Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, and checked the ActiveX and Macro settings, and they are "Enable all controls" and "Enable all macros"), respectively. I've also tried to open new Excel, and insert ActiveX controls, but none of them work. I get "Cannot insert object" error message.

If I take the same file and open with excel 2010, everything seems to work. So I don't think the file is corrupted. I can't seem to figure out what I need to do. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

I found the security update for Microsoft Office 2007 (KB2596927) and I deleted it, and now everything is working. Thanks to all for your timely input.

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
Hello, I am having the same issue as everyone else,

On my personal computer running win 7 and Office 2013 I simply deleted the .exd files as suggested and everything works normal now. However at work we use shared computers and are running win 7 and office 2010. Deleting the .exd files did not fix the issue. Could this be because other users have .exd files that have not been deleted? Also uninstalling the update is unfortunately not an option at work as I doubt head office would appreciate me removing security updates to every station I use lol. I've requested our IT dept to use the microsfot fixit to remove the .exd files for all users but who knows how long that may take. Do you think that would fix the issue? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

You have to apply the fix for all users but your IT department should be able to run a batch file to do it as part of a login script really.

Ok, that is what I was leaning towards. Hopefully they can get off their butts and roll this out in a timely manne lol. Thanks!

1.Close Your Excel 2. Goto C Drive 3. Search for *.exd Files 4. Delete all .exd files. 5. start Excel again it will solve Your ActiveX Object and "cannot insert object" problem

Any update on this ? I am experiencing the problem of not being able to insert an ActiveX control, but found no .EXD files on my C: drive.

You need to make sure to show hidden files and folders when searching. Try pressing Windows key and R, then type %temp% in the Run box and press enter. Then look in the Excel and Forms folders if there are any, and look for .exd files. (if you have used ActiveX controls at all, they will be there somewhere.

Guys,

This is driving me crazy - I have tried everything, using the Microsoft Fixit, manually deleting files, uninstalling, rebooting, you name it and I've probably done it.

I don't have the update that is mentioned installed so I am at a loss.

The only thing I have is 2 versions of office, 2003 and 2007 - all works fine in 2007 so not sure if this makes a difference.

Not much help I know but I think the update only applied to 2007 and later as 2003 is no longer actively supported so I think your only option is the manual deletion of .exd files and as you have already tried this....
