Bizarre Linking Issue--network hardrive naming problem?

Hi there:

I have a bizarre Excel linking issue at work which have been driving me crazy. The story goes like this:

my department's electronic files are stored in a company-network hard drive named xxxxx01. Our portion of this hard drive is called Z. From a reference standpoint, Z:\ is equal to \\xxxxx01\department$\. Historically, some of our files have links to "Z:\" while others have links to "\\xxxxx01\department$\". Not surprisingly, for some unknown reasons, Excel cannot recognize the two refer to the same directory; as a result, linked cells are not automatically updated in most of my department's files.

I am very curious to learn more about the cause of this issue as well as a quick and/or permanent way of fixing it. Many thanks!
