Pivot table on a active worksheet

Can a pivot table be setup to work on an active worksheet? I have a school survey going on and the responses filter to an Excel sheet. I have a table setup to count the number of responses from a given school but as the responses add to the data sheet, can a table increase automatically or do I have to go in and tweak the table accordingly? Hope this is a clear question.
