    Question Creating a (Gantt) sleep chart

    OK, after browsing the web for a few days, I canít figure out how to create this specific Gantt sleep chart. It has with 6 daily repeated tasks (in this case sleep sessions), with data spread past midnight, from 18h00 until 06h00. The closest online instruction I found, was this one, but it doesnít work for me: How to Make a Gantt Chart for Repeated Tasks | Katherine S. Rowell

    So I need to:

    • fix the horizontal axis
    • differentiate the different kinds of tasks.


    I would think this kind of chart would be easy to find, as Iím probably not the first person in the world to log my sleeping patern. But I canít find this kind of chart anywhere. So I guess many people would benefit from this.

    Looking at your data set; when you have two sleep rows back to back (for example 3rd and 4th row in the data set), but there is a time gap between them, do you assume the time between them was also sleep?

    Hi Easy2, thanks for looking into this!

    No, this gap is regarded as 'up at night'-time. This is not always explicitly indicated as it is not the most important parameter (but relevant nonetheless).

    FYI, the definitions used in sleep analysis are the following:

    SOL = Sleep Onset Latency (when you get in bed, but are not yet asleep)
    WASO = Wake After Sleep Onset (when you wake up at night and lie in bed awake)
    EMA = Early Morning Awakening (lying in bed after waking up in the morning)
    Sleep= Sleep

    To make additional calculations:
    TST = Total Sleep Time (all hours of sleep)
    TIB = Time In Bed (SOL+WASO+EMA+TST)
    SE = Sleep Efficiency (TST/TIB x 100)

    With these, you can analyse your sleep patern and see which part is the most difficult.


    Any suggestions on 'merging' the x-axis to a single 18h00 to 18h00 window? There's a clue in these instructions, but I can't make it work for me: How to Make a Gantt Chart for Repeated Tasks | Katherine S. Rowell
