I have a file with a column chart with columns that are far too narrow. It consists og dates on the x-axis and numeric data on the Y axis.

The dates span 4 years and exist for only May & October.

Attempting to widen the bars using "Format data series" "options" is thwarted as the gap-width is initialized to "0".

The x-axis (dates) scale base unit is Months and scale Major&Minor unit are both 6 months.

Do you know of any trick to widen these columns?

Easy bullets in Excel
If you have a numeric keypad, press Alt+7 on numeric keypad to type a bullet in Excel.
Why not using the data series for only the two months per year, time 4 years, that comes to 8 values. This way you can control without problem the width of the column. Why keep 10 x 4 = 40 X-axis points without values.
