I am trying to use the formula "sumif" and i have a range from say 0-299, 300-399, 400-499, 622-699. These are account numbers. Currently i get a 0 in the field when i use the groups as the criteria. If i just have a single account number say 610 then it will work but not a range of account numbers.

Is there something i am doing wrong.

I'm a little hazy on the question, but I suspect you need a SUMIFS:

=SUMIFS(A:A,B:B,">=300",B:B,"<=399")

If you must use sumif (because you don't have XL2007+)
Try
=SUMIF(B:B,">=300",A:A)-SUMIF(B:B,">399",A:A)
