MrExcel Message Board FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

What are the Forum Rules?

Follow this link to see the Forum Rules

Is there other advice about using the forums?

Yes, see here for the Forum Use Guidelines

How can I post a question on MrExcel?

You must first register before you can post to the board. Once you have fully activated your account and logged in, you choose a forum, such as Excel Questions, and you will see a '+Post New Thread' button at the top left or bottom left.
See this page for more detailed information.

How do I read a thread?

To read a thread, click on its title. You'll see some brief information about each member who has made a post in the thread at the left of the post.

How do I reply to a thread?

To post a reply to an existing thread, click on the + Reply to Thread button at the top left or bottom left of the page. If this button does not appear, it could mean that you are not logged in as a member, or that you do not have permission to reply, or that the thread has been closed to new replies.

Alternatively you can click the Reply to this Message Reply button at the bottom of any post to activate a 'Quick Reply' box.

Other options include ..

Multi quote Reply With Quote which allows you to include a quote of the post immediately above this icon in your reply. It is best not to quote whole long posts as it makes the thread more difficult to read and navigate but you can edit the quote to remove parts that are not relevant.

Multi quote (Multi-Quote) If you click this icon under multiple posts before you click +Reply to Thread then all of the selected posts will appear as quotes in your post. As above, try to keep the quotes short.

Can I attach my workbook to my question?

No. However, Section B of the Forum Use Guidelines gives some alternative ways to provide sample data.

Why am I not getting any replies to my forum question?

Most likely you have not followed the advice given in the Forum Use Guidelines, particularly section A.5.

How do I find my own threads or threads that I have replied to?

Click the 'Subscribed Threads' button at the top of any page.

Why does my question disappear so quickly from the first page of the forum and what can I do about it?

This is a busy board so the popular forums do move quickly. However, you should read A.7. of the Forum Use Guidelines & the link in that to #12 of the Forum Rules before becoming too concerned about your question dropping down the list.

How can I delete or edit my post or thread?

You cannot delete the whole post or thread. Deleting posts can make the other posts and therefore the whole thread meaningless. Once you have been a member for a while, you will be able to edit your own posts for up to 10 minutes after you first make the post.

If there is something in your post that really must be deleted (eg personal information that is not yours, unacceptable language etc) and you are unable to edit it yourself, then use the 'Report' button that appears at the bottom of each post & explain the circumstances. Note that your post will not be edited for trivial reasons like you don't want your boss to see what you have posted.

What can I do about being timed out while I compose a post?

When logging in, check the 'Remember Me?' box, and ensure you have Cookies enabled in your browser.

How do I retrieve what I typed and lost?

When typing up a new question or replying to an existing thread, what you type in is often Auto-Saved and can be retrieved, if lost before posting.

If it was a new question you were typing, go back to the forum you were posting to, click on “Post New Thread”, and at the bottom of the editor box you should see the phrase “Restore Auto-Saved Content”. Click on that to restore the lost text.

If it was a reply you were typing, go back to the thread you were posting to, click on “Reply to Thread”, and at the bottom of the editor box you should see the phrase “Restore Auto-Saved Content”. Click on that to restore the lost text.

Why does the formula I am trying to post sometimes not fully appear?

It most likely relates to a < symbol followed by a letter in your formula. Insert a space between those two characters. Alternatively you can use the following 4 characters (without the spaces) in place of the < sign & l t ;

What are some good Add-Ins or web pages that I can use?

Here is a list of Recommended Add-Ins and Links

Why doesn't the 'Advanced Search' facility seem to work correctly?

In Advanced Search, click the 'Search Single Content Type' tab and you should find better functionality.

Can I get paid for providing solutions in the forum or can I offer payment to receive a solution to my forum question?

NO. See #5 of the Forum Rules. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the post(s) being removed from the board. Repeat offenses may lead to expulsion from the board.

How do I find out who has 'Liked' my post and which post was 'Liked'?

There is currently no direct way to search for this.

Can I advertise a job on the board?

Job advertising is not allowed without permission from a board Admin member.

To hire help, check out Consulting Services for more details.

To post a company job position, send a PM to the board Admin, with a short job description. If accepted, you will be allowed a post in the Lounge with a short job description and a link to an external source where interested parties may get more information. The posting on our board may not include any contact information. After we have reviewed your post, it will be made a sticky, staying at the top of the forum for 30 days.

Search FAQ

Select this option if you would like your search to look in the text of FAQ items as well as their titles.

Select an option here to specify how you would like your search query to be treated. 'Any words' will return the most numerous but possibly least relevant results, while 'Complete phrase' will return only results that contain exactly what you are searching for.
