I’ve been learning word mail merge with excel. The question is how to get the merge fields in bold and italics but for only one single cell. When I apply bold formatting it formats all of the merged items at once. I only want one to be bolded and one with italics

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
Where are you doing the bold & italics - Excel or Word? If in Word what are you selecting when applying the formatting?

Sorry do not know what happened. I messed up my reply. What I wanted to say

In word, I highlighted <<name>> and then bold

but all name will be bold.. that is not what I want. I want to bold the 3 name that is in excel first column called name, and I want to italic the 5th name from the same column

Thank you so much

A mergefield cannot selectively bold or italicize different records or different parts of the same field in a given record.

If you want to selectively bold or italicize different records, you would have to add the necessary logic to the mailmerge main document using IF fields, for example, to determine which records to apply what formatting to.

Thanks for your reply. Let say I have in excel

Mary Smith
John Clark
Alex King
Eric Lee

In Word I want to format only the first 2 name and the rest are the same like the following

Mary Smith (bold the first name)
John Clark (italic the first name)
Alex King (no change as in excel)
Eric Lee (no change)

Can that be done?
