Problem inserting unwanted characters

I have a Lenovo laptop, and I find myself inadvertently inserting characters into my spreadsheets. I have already disabled the trackpad, and use only the red dot in the middle of the keyboard for moving the cursor around, but I still find all types of unwanted characters. I have Undo in the toolbar so I can quickly revert back 1 or 2 actions if I detect it soon enough, but I don't always do this--and of course, I save every 30 seconds or so, but if I have entered something without realizing it, I can't really pour over every cell to verify that each cell's contents is what I wanted.

I actually spend more time in word processors, but don't seem to have this issue with them, or with web browsers--just with spreadsheets. I'm suspecting that I'm inserting these characters (that often will copy over the original values--which is the real irritant when I'm using these spreadsheets to record student grades) when I'm moving the cursor from one place to another, or just going from Excel to another program on my laptop.

Has anyone else had this issue, and come up with a solution?

Excel Facts

Enter current date or time
Ctrl+: enters current time. Ctrl+; enters current date. Use Ctrl+: Ctrl+; Enter for current date & time.
i turn off the track pad and any mouse options they have and just use a mouse, so rare to hit an errant value. lots trackpads have expression so to cause issues
