Below Is the best free cure for Windows 8. It has the option to disable the sidebar.

I think some of these issues are going to be addressed in the 8.1 release...making the desktop feel more like a desktop. Personally, I'd hold off on any 3rd party add-ins until after the update. Wish I had a better link, but here's something Windows 8.1 Preview Now Available - IGN
